Plantastic gifts for Mother’s Day, with Dobbies
-Dobbies highlights sustainable gifting alternatives for Mum-
Give a gift that blooms with love this Mother’s Day from Dobbies, the UK’s leading garden centre. Houseplants are a great value, sustainable gift for the mother figure in your life, lasting as a celebration of your special bond for years to come.
Whether a green-fingered goddess or a new plant parent, Dobbies has a stunning range of houseplants for every level of style and skill. And with options starting from just £9.99, you don’t need to spend a fortune to show your love. Dobbies’ Senior Houseplant Buyer, Claire Bishop, outlines how to care for and style her new favourite Mother’s Day picks available in store and online.
Feminine elegance
Phalaenopsis Multiflora Orchid in Ceramic 12cm, £24.99; Phalaenopsis Orchid 2 Spike in Pastel Ceramic 12cm, £29.99
A gifting favourite, Orchids are renowned for their towering structural beauty and graceful flowers. These beautiful houseplants can last for years with the right care and provide a number of benefits, such as improved air quality and reduced stress levels. Claire said: “These ornamental wonders make a great addition to dining tables or office desks, lending a stylish touch to any working or living space. Orchids make excellent gifts as a low-effort, high-reward houseplant, flowering for as long as three months at a time – far longer than cut flowers. To reach their full blooming potential and produce multiple displays of flowers within a year, simply water whenever the potting mix has fully dried out and keep in a warm spot between 16-29°C.”
Sensational shapes
Anthurium Zizou In Purple Bari Pot 12cm, £22.99
Anthuriums are perfect for Mother’s Day gifting as they flower year-round, showing off their ornate ribbon-shaped petals that contrast against lush, deep green foliage. Dobbies has a selection of candy-coloured pastels to choose from. Claire says: “Anthuriums’ unusual, exotic shape stands out in any setting and the soft colour palette we currently offer is great for complementing most home décor styles. These plants do best in humid, warm rooms with plenty of indirect sunshine. Conservatories make great homes for Anthuriums but it’s best to keep them tucked away from any draughts or radiators that could affect their temperature, and you should be sure to mist them or group alongside other plants to raise their humidity levels. If you live in a cooler climate, keeping your Anthurium in a bathroom is an easy and energy efficient way to ensure they have regular access to moisture in the air.”
Stephanotis Fleur Parfum 12cm, £22.99
Another eye-catching plant that’s sure to impress mum this Mother’s Day is the captivating Stephanotis floribunda, or Madagascar Jasmine as it’s more commonly known. Wonderfully fragrant, this beautiful houseplant will instantly transform any space and makes a great gift. Claire says: “The Stephanotis floribunda needs plenty of sunlight so it’s ideal spot would be in a bright conservatory or window sill. During its growing season it needs regular waterings and it thrives in humidity so will benefit from a generous misting every couple of days, especially in the warmer months.”
Timeless terrariums
Terrarium Deline With Kalanchoe 13cm, £22.99; Terrarium Isabella With Foliage 15cm, £39.99; Terrarium in Coloured Glass With Foliage 22cm, £79.99
Terrariums are a simple and effective way for even the most novice of plant parents to welcome a miniature paradise of foliage into their living space. Easy to care for and excellent for injecting life into small spaces, these tropical displays are perfect for gifting. Claire says: “These delicately layered Terrariums are far hardier than they look and thrive in their own ecosystem. We would recommend placing them in an area with bright, indirect sunlight, away from any heat sources such as radiators which could cause overheating. Terrariums are just as happy on a windowsill arranged between homewares or sitting proudly on an office desk. A Terrarium with a closed top will thrive on its own but if your Terrarium is open, add around 50ml of water once a week, or whenever the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch.”
Pops of pink
Tillandsia Sweet Ostia 10cm, £14.99; Anthurium Zizou in Glass 12cm, £34.99
If you’re looking to put a smile on mum’s face, you can’t go wrong with a colourful plant in her favourite colour. Pink is always popular for spring and Dobbies has a wide range of houseplants to choose from. Claire says: “The Tillansdia cyanea, or Pink Quill plant, is a wonderfully unique houseplant that will instantly perk up any home. This unique plant is best placed in a bright spot, out of direct sunlight, and requires regular misting to keep its leaves hydrated. Just make sure you don’t waterlog the soil otherwise its roots will rot. Other pink varieties that are great for Mother’s Day gifting include the popular Anthurium, and this year we have hydroponic variations which offer a different look and feel for fans of this popular houseplant.”

Homewares to make you happy, from Dobbies
Garden centre unveils new season collection for SS23
With spring just around the corner, the UK’s leading garden centre, Dobbies has unveiled its new SS23 homewares collection that has everything you need to give your living space a seasonal refresh.
Whether you’re looking to brighten up a neutral bathroom, inject life into your home office, or give your lounge an upgrade with interiors that can be used both indoors and out, Dobbies has something to suit all styles. From timeless designs to trending products, Dobbies’ Senior Buyer, Hayley Ker, talks through all the newness from the garden centre and showcases how you can welcome happiness into your home this spring.
Effortless throws
Fleece throw, £9.99; Simply Green throw in orange, £29.99; Simply Green throw in green, £34.99
Dobbies’ new season throws demonstrate how easy it can be to transform a space. Hayley says: “For anyone looking to instantly elevate a sofa, bench or sitting area in their home, a stylish throw is the perfect choice. Use these to create a cosy, lived-in feel and bring your interiors together. Lightweight fabrics are great for the warmer months and can be used outside as an extra layer when the nights cool down. These will look just as chic tidied away in a wicker basket as they do draped over an armchair, so you can have fun styling them and switching up your space.
“Our new range of Simply Green throws are fantastic for eco-conscious interior lovers out there as not only do they look great but they’re made from recycled plastic bottles, making them a wonderful ‘green’ choice. And for those who like to keep up with the trends, we have some beautiful Viva Magenta throws and accessories, inspired by this year’s Pantone Colour of the Year, that will give your home a welcome burst of vibrancy.”
Versatile cushions
Face cushion, £19.99; Simply Green cushion in blue, £29.99; Blue stripe floor cushion, £49.99
Just like how throws can elevate your space, so too can cushions. Hayley says: “Throw pillows are a great value way to change up your interiors for the new season and can add warmth with different textures and designs. If you’re looking to add some personality into your space but don’t want to commit to a bold paint choice or wallpaper, throw pillows can be a fun way to express yourself and add a pop of colour. Mix and match different sizes to add dimension, and if you’re working with a smaller space, larger pillows can double up as extra floor seating when you entertain. We also have sustainable options from the Simply Green range.”
Statement vases
Cammy vase, £12.99; Mottled vase, £32.99; Wavy handle vase, £39.99
To make the most of foraged foliage or dried stems, Dobbies has a range of new vases to give your interiors the wow factor. Hayley says: “There’s no better time than spring to invest in some good-quality vases, and we’ve got something to suit spaces of all styles. The trend of terracotta and clay designs is showing no signs of slowing down and these classic vases will last for decades if cared for properly, making them a great value buy for your home.
“Blue interiors and homewares inspired by the coast are set to be huge for 2023, but if you don’t want to go overboard, you can tap into the trend by styling a blue vase for a pop of spring vibrancy.”
Beautiful baskets
Seagrass baskets, from £19.99; Fabric striped basket, from £29.99
Baskets can be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing, and Hayley notes how these can work in your home. “Baskets are great storage solutions for every room in your home, especially if you’re working with limited space. Their versatility means they can just as easily be used as a place to put extra blankets and throws as they can as a quirky container for large houseplants or as a stylish way to tidy away children’s toys. Group different sized baskets together for a more curated look and have fun with colours and texture as a way to add some personality to your interiors.”
Artistic additions
Morris print, £29.99; Fruit bowl print, £29.99; Shapes print, £46.99
No home is complete without art, and Dobbies has a new range of prints for spring that will add a boost of creativity to your space. Hayley says: “Prints are an easy way to upgrade your home and give it a sophisticated feel without spending a fortune. Whether you’re looking to fill an empty wall, add some colour to your bookshelves, or dress up your mantelpiece, great value prints are a wonderful choice and offer a fun way to personalise your home.
“William Morris prints are fantastic for adding a touch of grown-up elegance and are suited to most rooms. If you’re hoping to elevate your kitchen or dining area with some spring vibrancy, fruit designs are always popular and never go out of style. If you prefer minimalistic Scandi interiors, abstract prints are a great touch and will make your house feel like a home.”
Finishing touches
Fish candle holder, £6.99; Pink LED candles, £19.99; Firwood lantern, £29.99.
To put the final touches on your home, Hayley notes that a few carefully selected products can make a huge difference. Hayley says: “When it comes to refreshing your interiors, don’t neglect the finishing touches as these are the final piece of the puzzle. Colourful dinner candles will instantly elevate a fireplace or dining table, and tealights scattered throughout your lounge will create a charming ambience when the sun sets. Quirky candle holders are also a fabulous way to add flair to your home and can be styled in a variety of places for a pop of fun.
“Lanterns are great for making your space feel more homely and will brighten up any shady spots. These are also wonderful transition pieces to carry your interiors throughout the seasons and can be used both indoors and out. Use them in your garden or patio during the warmer months to upgrade your outdoor living, and then as the darker nights set in, style lanterns of different sizes throughout your home to create a cosy vibe.”
