About

Tim is an award-winning fine art and advertising photographer who runs a busy studio in central London. He has worked with many global brands over the years but has always combined these commissions with developing his own personal creative practice. This is work that looks most at home in a frame on a wall.

His photography is inspired by a fascination for small details that may otherwise remain unnoticed. A captured moment, frozen in time, allows us to observe the world in suspension and will sometimes reveal a graphic beauty that might otherwise flash by in the blink of an eye to be gone forever.

Having worked for many years with meticulous advertising clients Tim is a perfectionist, obsessed with quality which he applies to every stage of his creative practice. From the technical skills required both behind the camera and during his post-production processing, to the creation of his beautiful limited-edition fine art prints.

However, he believes that although craft and technique should not be underestimated, it is a mysterious neural connection between the eye and the brain that makes great images, and technique should remain safely behind the scenes. Nowhere does this connection matter more than when an image is framed on a wall, where it will be enjoyed for many years to come.

International Photography Awards winner 2022 and 2023

He recently won first place in the Nature/Flowers category in the prestigious International Photography Awards 2023 for his macro Flower Portraits series. These images use a "focus stacking" technique to enhance clarity and definition at large print sizes.

Tim says of his Flower Portraits series: “The closer you get, the more you see. And the more abstract an image becomes. I like to think of this deep focus close-up effect as hyper-realism as it allows us to make heroes of small things and appreciate them in a new way. These bold and colourful images evoke a uniquely subjective response in the viewer, at a visceral level based more on the emotions than the intellect."

He also won first place in the Fine Art/ Abstract category in the International Photography Awards 2022 for his Botanical Opticals project based on his recent stills and motion work with flowers.

Tim says of his Botanical Opticals series: “The mandala patterns promote a sense of relaxation and wellbeing. They are both absorbing and visually stimulating and encourage viewers to focus on something beautiful and hypnotic that is inspired by the natural world. The mandala is a symbol used in Buddhism and Hinduism to represent the universe. It was also the famous psychoanalyst Carl Jung’s chosen archetype for the whole self. An archetype in the deeper layer of unconscious Jung called the ‘Collective Unconscious’. A universal part of our unconscious that we all share. They are beautiful symbols to meditate with and focus on, and visually vibrate with a calm, balanced energy."

Award winning floral fine art photography collection

Update: First place winner IPA Awards 2023!

We are delighted to announce that Tim Platt has won a first prize in the International Photography Awards 2023 for his Flower Portraits. This is the second year running that Tim has won a first prize in these prestigious awards, as last year he won first place in the Abstract Fine Art category.

Summer Flower Portraits 2023
Fine art photographer Tim Platt has been working over the summer on a brand new collection of 14 vibrant, colourful flower portraits from his garden. Each image is blended from up to 160 shots at slightly different focal points for enhanced definition and depth of field. This technique is known as focus-stacking and results in remarkable detail and clarity when using a close-up lens. Detail, definition and impact, are greatly enhanced at larger print sizes.

Tim says "Still-life photography allows us to marvel at the astonishing details in nature's grand design. When you magnify flowers you make heroes of them and appreciate them in a new way. Some of these flowers are less than 20mm wide. When blended from many shots at different focus points I can achieve full depth of field in a way that is otherwise impossible when using a macro lens. Detail, form, texture and colour are emphasised in an almost hyper-realistic way. I like to think that these elements combine to create different personalities, which is why I call them flower portraits.

Try these suggestions to add zest and personality to your space with colour.
Adding art to your home is a great way to inject colour, vibrancy, and personality into your living space. Art can transform a room, evoking emotion and creating ambience. Whether you prefer paintings, sculptures, prints, or photographs, here are some tips on how to effectively use art to add colour.

1. Choose art with bold colours:
Look for artwork with vibrant colours that complement your existing decor. Select pieces with shades already present in your space or colours that compliment your furniture and walls. Bold colours can instantly draw attention and create focal points in a room. Add some energy with vibrant colours and bold shapes.

2. Use neutral tones for balance:
When adding colourful art, balance is key. If your room is decorated in neutral colours, introducing colourful art can make the space come alive. However, if your room already features a mix of vibrant colours, consider opting for art with softer tones to prevent an overload. Choose artworks that feature complementary colours that pick up on existing shades in the room. Consider adding monochromatic or black-and-white tones to help ground the space.

3. Incorporate art into functional spaces:
Don't restrict your art to only the living room or bedroom. Use art to add colour to hallways, entrances, or the kitchen. Add character and visual interest to these areas and create a cohesive flow throughout your home.

Art is a powerful tool for adding life and colour to your home. By carefully selecting and displaying artworks that resonate with your style and personality, you can create a visually captivating and inspiring living space that reflects your unique tastes and passions.

Why invest in fine art photography?

A beautiful image in a frame on your wall is not just decoration. Framed pictures are like windows. They are aesthetic focal points to both look at and look through. Visitors will admire them, and they will enhance the positive energy within your home or workspace. They will last a lifetime and will eventually become old friends.

Your home is your sanctuary, a space where you can express your personality and create an ambience that resonates with your inner self. While furniture, colours, and lighting play vital roles in home decor, one element that often surpasses them all is art. The transformative power of art cannot be overstated.

You may move house, redecorate or change your furniture, but your artworks will remain a constant in your life. You will never regret the decision to invest in something beautiful for your everyday space. To begin with you will enjoy admiring your new acquisition, with an inner glow! Over time it will become a valued and constant part of the fabric of your environment, always there and helping to promote a reassuring sense of continuity.

Tim Platt
Tim's lifelong passion for photography began when he was given a clunky old Russian 'Zenith' SLR camera when he was 12. Before long he had a basic darkroom set up in the cellar and was swishing black and white prints around in trays of chemicals. He has since forged an award-winning career in advertising and fine art photography, and runs a busy central London studio.

Our collections
Tim is now focused on his personal creative practice and has released four collections of beautiful strictly limited edition fine art prints. These are Animals, Birds, Flora (a series of flower portraits) and Tim's award winning Botanical Opticals series of abstract floral art.
