For the beautiful marquetry of this antique dressing table, the maker combined three types of veneer: Rosewood, kingwood and satinwood. Raised on curved and slender legs the dressing table has four exterior drawers, a pull-out writing top, a built in flip up central mirror. On one side there is an area to place cosmetic containers and on the other side an area to place beauty products.
In the 17th century the term dressing table was applied to small tables with two or three drawers. It soon became common practice to conceal the fittings of the dressing tables when they were not in use. 18th-century cabinetmakers exercised great ingenuity to combine elaborate fittings with a handsome piece of furniture. Abraham (1711–1793) and David Roentgen (1743–1807) made one of the most beautiful examples for a dressing table in 1769. It was on view during and exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in 2013-14.
The dressing measures 29.53 x 35.44 x 20.08 inches and comes refinished and French polished.
