DeepL Translate

An exquisite and remarkable antique Victorian sterling silver jug of notable royal provenance, part of our distinguished collection of antique silver jugs and dining items. This splendid antique Victorian sterling silver covered beer jug features a circular design. The gracefully undulating body of the jug is adorned with a striking continuous depiction of a village scene, showcasing figures engaged in various activities, complemented by spiraling fruiting vines in the background. This decorative style draws inspiration from Flemish and Dutch genre paintings, particularly those created in the late 17th century by David Teniers II. The underside of the lip is further enhanced with a cast representation of a youth, seemingly positioned to catch the final drop from the spout. The jug is equipped with an exceptional hinged cover, hallmarked and embellished with additional fruiting vine motifs, along with two cast figurines on the back. The cover is topped with an impressive cast finial designed in a bud style. The interior of the cover features a contemporary engraved inscription reading, "Henry Peverill Le Mesurier. From Their Royal Highnesses The Princes Philip and Augustus of Saxe Coburg Gotha, as a Friendly Souvenir of their Sport with him in India, 1873." This antique silver jug is also fitted with a striking cast silver handle, decorated with vine motifs and featuring a bifurcating lower terminal.
