Description
The 'Blue Butterfly Marquetry Box' is a stunning work of art created by Max Clerteau, using traditional dovetail box-making techniques and marquetry. Marquetry is a craft that involves creating a design or image by precisely cutting and fitting small pieces of wood onto a base. Max carefully hand-cuts each piece of wood, selecting various grains and colours, and then glues them into place according to his design. Given that marquetry is a meticulous, time-consuming process, crafting a single picture may take several hours using tools like fret saws, scroll saws, and scalpels to achieve the desired shapes. This box features natural and dyed timbers, with the main body made from Huon Pine, the lid from Silver Ash, and the butterfly background from fiddle back Sycamore veneer. Dyed timbers are used in the butterflies, the blue stripping that frames the image, and the finely detailed corner dovetail.
This remarkable box makes an ideal gift for a special occasion or presentation, thanks to its unique design and unparalleled craftsmanship. Max honed his marquetry skills in France, where this craft and the guilds that teach it have a centuries-long history. This particular box is the third of a limited edition series of 20 and is personally signed by the artist. It is truly a one-of-a-kind piece that will be appreciated by all who see it.
