Description

This attractive blanket chest is a nice size to be used as a low coffee table, with handy storage space inside. Produced in Hebei province near Beijing around the start of the last century, it is made from camphor wood, with a lovely honey coloured tone. Chests like this were used particularly in northern China to hold clothes and were often made in stackable sets. Camphor was a popular material not only for its attractive appearance but also as it's aroma acts as a repellent to moths or wood boring insects. This one is smaller than most, made with dovetail joints and fitted with a circular brass clasp on the front (a replacement for the original).
