Chests like this were used particularly in northern China to hold clothes and were often made in stackable sets. Camphor was a popular material not only for its attractive appearance but also as it's aroma acts as a repellent to moths or wood boring insects. This one is smaller than most, made with dovetail joints and fitted with a circular brass clasp on the front (a replacement for the original).
