Inspired by Mousehole’s much-loved Sea, Salts and Sail Festival, this vibrant painting captures one of Cornwall’s most colourful coastal celebrations. Viewed from the beach, the historic harbour is transformed into a magnificent display of traditional sailing boats, working craft and colourful lug sails, recreating the atmosphere of the great age of sail.

Towering red, cream, ochre and pink sails fill the harbour while fishing boats weave between the fleet across sparkling turquoise water. Families gather on the beach, swimmers enjoy the sea, dogs play along the shoreline and seals appear among the boats, creating the joyful storytelling and lively detail for which John Dyer’s paintings are renowned. Founded by the Pezzack family and the Mousehole community in 1996, the Sea, Salts and Sail Festival celebrates Cornwall’s extraordinary maritime traditions and the enduring identity of Mousehole as a working fishing village. Held every two years, the festival brings together historic vessels, traditional seamanship and the local community in one of the county’s most distinctive cultural events.

John Dyer’s expressive colourist style perfectly captures both the energy and emotion of the festival. Dynamic brushwork animates the sea and sky, while bold complementary colours make the magnificent sails glow against deep blues and turquoise water.
