Description

Ancestor paintings played an important part in the practice of ancestor worship in China for centuries, before the advent of photography. Families would remember and worship their ancestors with offerings placed in front of these paintings. The portraits were painted from front on and were usually close to life size, with the subjects seated and dressed in formal robes to show their rank badge. Original ancestor paintings are now rare and highly sought after. Our paintings are reproductions and smaller in size, but are accurate versions of old paintings. They are supplied mounted and framed as shown. This one depicts the wife of a high ranking official in bright red coloured robes, including the crane badge that signified her husband's position
