Mounted Art Deco Pochoir Christmas card, France. Circa 1920, signed Max Ninon.

Victor Max Ninon (Vittorio Accornero de Testa, Italian, 1896-1982) won a gold medal in Paris in 1925 for his pochoirs.

Beautiful cards made by the process of the “pochoir” - to hand stencil colour to a black line lithography.

It is a labour and time consuming technique which was made popular in the 19th century but very much in vogue during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods till the 1930’s when more mechanical printing techniques took over.

A “decoupeur” would cut stencils with a knife and the “coloristes” would then apply the colour with various brushes and also apply the hand finished touches. The result is a fine design with fresh and bright colours.
