White Marble With Its Edges Worn Away Calacatta Sugar in a tumbled finish is a white and gold marble brick mosaic on mesh-backed sheets of 30.5 x 30.5cm, by Hyperion Tiles. Tumbling takes this bright crystalline marble and puts a century on it in a few hours. Loaded into a drum with abrasive, each small brick loses its sharp arrises, picks up a few honest nicks and comes out with a dry, matt face rather than a mirror. The white settles into something closer to old plaster, and the amber and honey veins — iron oxides trapped in the stone as it recrystallised — soften from bright gold to a muted ochre. Held next to the polished version of the same stone, this one is quieter, warmer and considerably more forgiving. Worn edges give the brick bond a hand-laid rhythm, with slightly wider, more irregular joints that suit older houses and knocked-through cottages far better than a machine-perfect surface would. It is a good splashback in a kitchen with painted timber units, a good shower lining where the matt face keeps a little more grip than a polish, and a good border above a bath. Grout it in a warm sand tone and the whole panel reads as a single aged wall. Use a white flexible adhesive and back-butter any pieces that sit low. Layout: Tumbled bricks vary slightly in length, so run a string line rather than trusting the sheet edge, and accept a marginally wider joint than you would with a polished stone. Shuffle sheets from several boxes so the heavily veined bricks are spread across the panel. Cleaning: Warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner only.
