Carrara, Cut Down To Brick Scale This is polished Carrara white marble in a small brick-bond mosaic, supplied on mesh-backed sheets of 30.5 x 30.5cm, by Hyperion Tiles. Carrara has been quarried from the Apuan Alps of Tuscany since Roman times, and it is still the reference point for white marble: a cool, faintly blue-white ground crossed by grey veining that ranges from a whisper to a firm charcoal line. Polishing closes the surface and brings the veins up sharp and glassy, so every brick reflects a little of the room back. Cut this small, the veining lands differently on every piece — some almost plain, some with a single dramatic streak — and that scatter is what stops a polished white wall looking like a printed panel. The staggered brick bond is a workhorse: horizontal, quietly traditional, and forgiving of walls that are not perfectly square. It is a natural splashback behind a kitchen run or a basin, and it lines a shower enclosure beautifully. On floors, take note that polished marble is slippery when wet, so keep this one to walls, or reserve it for a dry cloakroom floor. Set it against warm brass, deep navy joinery or plain white gloss for the classic pairing. Use a white flexible adhesive — a grey bed will shadow through polished white marble and grey it off permanently. Layout: Brick bond lives or dies on its horizontals, so set a level batten for the first course and work up from it. Keep the stagger continuous across sheet joints by matching the offset before the adhesive skins, and finish external corners with a mitred or metal trim. Cleaning: Warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner only. Acidic limescale removers, vinegar and bleach will etch a permanent dull mark into the polished Carrara surface.
