Agathis australis, commonly known by its Māori name 'Kauri', is a coniferous tree found north of 38°S in the northern districts of New Zealand's North Island.

These Kauri trees are prehistoric—some buried up to 50,000 years ago and preserved under peat swamps by an unexplained force of nature at the end of the last ice age. They now provide us with timber untouched by modern life and in exquisite condition. Each trunk can be up to 5 metres in diameter and stand at an impressive 40 - 50 metres tall. It’s nothing short of extraordinary that these trees were alive nearly two thousand years before they were buried.
