Shanxi circa 1870 Constructed from elm wood with a refined, tall profile, this cabinet hails from Shanxi province in China and retains its original black lacquer finish. A lovely patina has formed over time, adding to its elegant appeal. This 19th century piece boasts old iron hardware on its doors, while its distinctive style, unique to China, features smoothly rounded frames that taper upwards, creating an illusion of upward movement. Its doors are attached using wooden dowels that slot into the top and bottom frames, a clever and straightforward design that delivers a sleek and minimalist look. On the doors, the lacquer has worn away to expose the beautiful grain of the elm wood, adding another layer of charm. The natural colour of the wood has also been revealed around the feet due to wear. The interior, still in its original dark reddish brown shade, includes a fixed shelf with two central drawers and two removable shelves. In remarkably original condition, this cabinet is ideal for storage in a bedroom or living space.
