Description

Xinjiang, circa 1920 - this unusual sideboard would be ideal for storage or as a TV stand, with plenty of space inside the four doors. Made from chunky pine, it originates from the northwestern Chinese province of Xinjiang. The ornate, geometric carvings on the doors, surrounding frames and bottom apron are typical of the daybeds produced in the region, heavily influenced by the styles of neighbouring central Asian countries. This unit has been produced by resizing an old daybed, with the doors added from what were once fixed panels. Originally brightly painted, the colours have largely worn to the natural pine wood underneath, but traces of the once vibrant reds, greens, pinks and purples are still visible.
