Shanxi, circa 1920

This delightful cabinet originates from Shanxi province and dates from the early 20th century. It is finished in a warm red lacquer typical of the region, now beautifully aged to a soft, mellow tone. The doors are finely decorated with black painted landscape scenes, executed in delicate linework. These are not original but were added as part of the cabinet's restoration and are in keeping with the original design.

They depict a mountain village scene, with scholars, attendants and pavilions set among trees, rolling hills and distant peaks. Such scenes are often seen on Shanxi furniture and were intended to evoke the idealised landscapes associated with the Chinese scholar’s life — places of retreat, contemplation and harmony with nature. They symbolise peace, balance and the pursuit of learning, qualities highly valued in Chinese culture.

The surrounding border is decorated with scrolling floral motifs, along with a number of butterflies - a symbol in China for longevity and marital happiness. The repeated roundels along the lower apron symbolise wholeness and protection. Together, these decorative elements were designed to bring auspicious blessings to the household.

A shaped brass lock plate typical of Shanxi furniture is fitted on the doors, beautifully patinated and adding a pleasing contrast to the red lacquer. The cabinet’s simple, upright form — with its straight legs and enclosed, panelled sides — is typical of Shanxi furniture, which is known for its sturdy construction and elegant proportions.

Originally used for storing clothing or personal belongings, this piece today would make a charming side cabinet, lamp table or hallway storage, adding colour, warmth and a touch of antique character to any setting. Its timeworn lacquer and evocative painted decoration make it a wonderful example of Shanxi’s rich artistic tradition.
