Description

Burls (those round lumps on the sides of trees) of this size are increasingly rare, coming as they do from very big old trees. The unique and massive burl from which this bowl was carved came from an old Red Mallee tree. After it is removed from the tree, which done right is a harmless process, the burl goes through a long, 18-month process of drying, carving, resting and carving again to achieve its final shape which follows the natural contours of the original burl. Working with burls, inherently idiosyncratic and freeform in structure, means going with them not against them, to achieve a flowing organic form whose natural shape still echoes the original burl. The wonderfully textured outer shell of the burl is left intact as much as possible to contrast with the smooth polished interior of the bowl where the swirls and rich patterns of the burl are revealed in their intricate, fascinating complexity. This bowl is unique and would make a visual statement wherever it finds a home - in a boardroom, reception area, dining table or sideboard.
Carved by master woodworker Bob Norris, this is a major exhibition piece that states its presence in any room.
