Every piece here is the same stone, which makes the small differences matter more. Shellstone runs from oatmeal through to a pale toffee, and across a sheet you will find shell casts, faint bedding lines and the odd rust-coloured mineral seam — the record of a shallow sea compressed into rock. Brushing softens the arrises and leaves a lightly rippled face that catches low light and holds shadow in the grain, so a wall of it never looks flat or machine-made even though the hexagons themselves are cut precisely. A single-colour hexagon is the more restrained way to use this shape. It works as a whole-room bathroom floor where a two-tone mix would be busy, as a shower tray surround, or as a run of splashback behind a stone worktop. Because the tone is warm rather than grey, it forgives hard water marks and sits comfortably with terracotta, painted timber and unlacquered brass. The brushed face also gives useful grip underfoot in a wet room. Limestone is porous and will absorb grout pigment if left bare. Use a white flexible rapid-set adhesive and a fine, unsanded grout in a tone close to the stone. Layout: Because the pieces are all one stone, sort the sheets by depth of colour before fixing and blend the palest and darkest across the floor rather than opening one box at a time. Set out from a centre line and keep the sheet-to-sheet joint identical to the internal joints. Cleaning: Warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner only.
