Flat Light On Honed Travertine Valencia in a honed finish is a travertine hexagon mosaic in beige and brown, supplied on mesh-backed sheets of 30.5 x 26.5cm, by Hyperion Tiles. Honing grinds the stone flat and stops short of a polish, so this travertine holds a smooth, low-sheen face that reads as a solid block of colour: warm beige through to a soft nut brown, banded in the horizontal layers the stone was deposited in around ancient springs. Because the surface is even rather than textured, small scuffs and everyday wear disappear into it, and the honed face makes the browner bands look deeper and more saturated than the same stone brushed. Travertine is porous by nature, so its open pores are filled at the factory and the finished surface is smooth to the hand. Use it where you want warmth without pattern. A honed hexagon floor gives a bathroom a settled, almost plastered look, particularly with a grout matched close to the stone so the geometry only shows in certain light. It is equally good as a shower wall, or wrapped around a bath panel and up onto the reveal of a window. It suits olive and clay-coloured paint, aged bronze and pale ash timber. A white flexible adhesive keeps the beige clean. Layout: Lay a few sheets out dry and rotate them so the banding does not run in obvious stripes across the room. A honed surface shows lippage, so bed the sheets level and check across the joints with a straight edge as you go. Cleaning: Warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner only.
