These charming wooden boxes were produced in Jiangsu province in eastern China, near the cities of Shanghai and Suzhou. Each one opens up to reveal a mirror that can be angled upwards, as well as small drawers for storage. The boxes would have been used by wealthier women as jewellery boxes, with the drawers housing smaller items such as hairpins, beads and brooches or make-up. The clever design means that the box folds away into a compact shape for easy storage or for travelling. Still in their original finish, with brass hardware and hinges in place and in some cases, decorative bone inlays, these make lovely jewellery or gift boxes even today.
