Description

Dongbei, circa 1880 - this beautiful sideboard features a wonderful array of flora and fauna painted in gold over the deep, rich red lacquer surface in a style typical of the northeast (Dongbei) region of China. The detailed paintings stand out wonderfully against the background, providing eye catching detail and interest. Amongst other important symbols the paintings include pairs of fish to represent prosperity, butterflies for long life and marital happiness, and a pair of Mallard ducks for love and fidelity. A 'double happiness' symbol is located on the upper frame above the central door post.
The cabinet would have been produced not only for storage but also to double as an altar cabinet, with the top being used to display offerings to ancestors. The nature of the decorative gold paintings suggest it might also have been made as a gift to a newlywed couple.
Originally only the central doors would have been in place, with the outer being fixed. These have been adapted so that they can also open out, creating a more practical sideboard for modern use. The central post between the doors is removable to give easier access to the inside, whcih has a single shelf. With its rich finish and gold decoration, the sideboard would add a warmth and luxurious feel to any interior.
