It is made from pine but, as was traditional, was lacquered and decorated on the front with colourful paintings of flowers and landscapes. The paintings have lost some of their original vibrancy but are still visible against the pale background, with mountain landscapes either side of flowers on the central door. The doors themselves have been added using what were once fixed panels, as the unit would have been accessed originally from removable boards in the top.
The outer frames, sides and top surface have been updated with a distressed blue finish that provides a lovely contrast with the paler doors.
