Description

Produced in the western Chinese province of Gansu, this large sideboard in pine has been refinished but still shows the original circular paintings on each door. These each depict various flowers in rudimentary designs set against red, yellow and orange backgrounds. The paintings contrast with the surrounding finish in a distressed, pale blue. The cabinet would once have been used for grain or rice storage, accessed through the top. It has been restored and modified for use today, with doors and drawers added using what were once fixed panels. The doors give access to the full space inside, with removable shelves fitted for generous storage.
