The ground is a brighter, colder white with a fine sugary crystal structure that catches daylight, and the veining is fewer in number but far broader — confident charcoal and dove-grey lines, sometimes carrying a thread of warm gold at the edge. Honed rather than polished, the white stays soft instead of turning glassy, and the veins read almost graphically against it, like ink on cartridge paper. A high-contrast marble in a small hexagon is a decision, not a default: the veining crosses tile edges at every angle, so a laid area has real movement and needs a little curation. It rewards a compact space where the pattern can be taken in at once — a cloakroom floor, a shower enclosure, a splashback above a stone basin. Fix with a white, flexible cement-based adhesive and grout in white or the palest grey — a pigmented grout can bleed into a bright marble and there is no undoing it. Layout: Because the veining is bold, dry-lay the whole area face up before any adhesive is mixed and move tiles around until the strong grey lines are spread rather than pooling in one quarter. Set out from a centre line so cut hexagons land evenly at both perimeters, back-butter each tile, and keep the joint tight at 2mm so the white field carries across the honeycomb without a grid taking over. Cleaning: Warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner only. Acidic limescale removers, vinegar and bleach will etch a permanent dull mark into the honed Calacatta surface.
