The picket is a long hexagon, pointed at both ends and sometimes called a lantern or an arrow, and it gives a wall a directional pull that a plain square never will. Cut from Carrara White and honed rather than tumbled, each piece has a flat matt face and a crisp sawn edge, so the joints stay fine and the grey veining runs uninterrupted across the point. Honed marble is matt, wears quietly, and hides the small scuffs a polished surface would broadcast. Run vertically, the pickets lengthen a wall and suit a shower enclosure or the space between a basin and a mirror. Turned horizontally they behave more like a stretched brick and make a fine splashback. Either way the crisp edge means this is a mosaic that wants a narrow grout joint and a careful setter. Done properly it reads as a single cut-stone panel rather than a sheet of small pieces. Honed white marble is very unforgiving of pigment, so use a white flexible adhesive and a white or pale grey grout. Layout: Pickets need firm setting-out. Decide whether the points run vertically or horizontally, mark a centreline and work outwards so the cut pieces land symmetrically at both ends. Dry-lay two sheets to check the points interlock across the join, and keep the joint tight, because a wide joint loses the shape entirely. Cleaning: Warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner only.
