Description

Shandong, circa 1920 - this tall, elegant cabinet would once have been used for storing clothes, fabrics and other possessions in a Chinese home. It has been restored and given a new lease of life with a shiny grey green distressed lacquer that has been applied so as to still reveal the beautiful grain of the wood. The tapered profile, narrowing from the floor to the top and with doors that fit directly into the upper and lower frames on wooden dowels, is one of the most ingenious designs seen in Chinese furniture. Without the need for external hinges, the style has a simple, minimalist look and a sense of upward movement and fluidity. Often referred to as a 'round cornered' design, it is one that was commonly used for storage cabinets during the Ming dynasty and later. The cabinet has two removable shelves inside as well as a 'secret' storage compartment accessed by removing the bottom internal board. Perfect today for bedroom or living room storage.
