Description

Shanxi, circa 1860 This magnificent red lacquer cabinet has a simple yet elegant style, and with its rich, warm tones it would make a lovely addition to any reception room or bedroom. The original finish is still intact, though now worn and aged to a subtler red with all the character of its long use. Unusually for cabinets like this, the iron hardware on the doors is also original, and provides the only decorative element on an otherwise understated design. The doors are mounted on wooden dowels that slot directly into the top and bottom frames, adding to the purity of the cabinet's look. This cabinet was likely included in a bride's dowry, traditionally adorned in red as the colour represents good luck in China. Unlike other cabinets of its kind, this one has not been retouched or repainted recently, adding to its unique charm and worn look. The interior boasts two removable shelves and a hidden compartment at the bottom, accessed by removing a half board. Generously proportioned, the cabinet would add a warmth and sense of history to any space, with plenty of practical space for clothing or other items.
